Driving Mission Critical Process Value from the Internet of Things

This week's conversations at Appian World 2015 have had no shortage of discussions about the Internet of Things (IoT).

By now you have heard of IoT and its dominating presence as a technology phenomenon. As IoT continues to gain momentum with each new smart device and prototype, businesses will look to align strategies to support IoT and satisfy customer needs.

But, overlooked by the attention each new device receives is the power of data and what it can bring to IoT for business.

IoT is about creating awareness, driving more knowledge, and taking action more quickly than previously possible. During alive demonstration on the Appian World mainstage, Rahul Dubey, Vice President, Enterprise Sales and Global Head of BPM Practice, Persistent Systems, discussed how Appian can play a critical role in your IoT strategy by orchestrating and managing mission critical processes on a number of devices including sensors, drones, and smartwatches.

And you can be sure everyone took notice of this fascinating presentation, especially as we look to real life examples of how IoT can be used. Take for instance the recent earthquake in Nepal that is dominating world news. In the case of this natural disaster, IoT capabilities can provide innovative incident management capabilities by combining smart devices and revolutionary access to data.

IoT, which excludes PCs, tablets and smartphones, will grow to 26 billion units installed in 2020, representing an almost 30-fold increase from 0.9 billion in 2009, according to Gartner, Inc. IoT product and service suppliers will generate incremental revenue exceeding $300 billion, mostly in services, by 2020. This transformation will result in $1.9 trillion in global economic value-add through sales into diverse end markets.

During the live demo, Dubey and fellow Persistent Systems team members took the audience through a demonstration of how the Appian platform can be integrated across smart devices including a drone, smartwatch and mobile heat sensors. The demonstration was centered around how Appian solutions can be deployed as an incident management solution accessible to fieldworkers on-site from various remote locations.

Vendors such as Appian create a modern application to enable new data sources and smart technology for business to leverage the real value of IoT: not the device itself. During the presentation, Dubey used several devices to showcase how Appian is the optimal solution to extract critical data from IoT including on-site task assignment and review, incident management recordings, and modernized Geo-location capabilities.

If you are here at Appian World this week, be sure to stop by the Persistent Systems table during the conference Solutions Showcase. Take a deeper look at their offering with Appian and realize the power of IoT!
