Appian Available as a Managed Service in Impact Level IV (IL4) Cloud for DoD and Federal Customers

The Department of Defense (DoD) and federal agencies require higher security standards for their mission-critical systems. The urgent need to increase the security of U.S. economic, industrial and defense information was highlighted in the March, 2019 “Secretary of the Navy Cybersecurity Readiness Review.” The report found that non-U.S. hackers were pilfering so much Intellectual Property (IP) and classified secrets from the Defense Industrial Base that it was “materially eroding” U.S. economic and military advantages.

Appian and Smartronix Partner to Deliver IL4 Cloud Security for Federal Government Customers

Government and Defense agencies can now leverage Appian’s market leading low-code development platform in a highly secure, fully Managed Service cloud offering. Customers requiring this higher level of cloud security will also benefit from a service level agreement (SLA) rich solution that guarantees both Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) and Recovery Time Objectives (RTO).

Last month, Appian and Smartronix announced a strategic partnership to deliver the speed, flexibility and power of enterprise low-code development to government agencies that require the storage of secure data. The Appian platform will be deployable as a managed service in either Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Microsoft Azure government clouds supported by Smartronix’s best-in-class managed services platform.

The Appian and Smartronix partnership is a major milestone in the evolution of enterprise low-code technology for defense and government agencies that need protection for sensitive information. Smartronix was the first company to provide a DoD CIO approved IL4 commercial cloud infrastructure (IaaS) based on the DISA Cloud Computing Security Requirements Guide (CCSRG). Smartronix was also the first company to migrate a government agency to the cloud, and Gartner has recognized Smartronix as a “Leader” in its Magic Quadrant for Cloud Hosting Managed Service Providers for corporations and government organizations.

Benefits for Appian Platform Customers

  • Government agencies can deploy Appian applications in a fully managed environment at the IL4 and IL5 security levels with a comprehensive SLA.
  • Appian customers can access advisory services to more efficiently earn ATO, CON, RMF, and CAP certifications.
  • Agencies can choose managed services on either Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Microsoft Azure.
  • Appian can host and manage software applications from other vendors in the same infrastructure for customers with highly secure data, to enhance performance and limit VPN connections.

DoD Low-Code Applications in an IL4 Cloud

Appian is the software platform for the U.S. Air Force Contracting-Information Technology (CON-IT) program, a mission-critical system hosted in an IL4 cloud. The low-code solution has replaced seven legacy contract writing systems to standardize acquisition contract writing across the Air Force, drive efficiency for the acquisition and contracting communities, reduce costs, and provide a platform to make functionality enhancements and statutory changes faster.

Government agencies depend on Appian as a trusted partner to deploy scalable low-code solutions in secure cloud, on-premises, and hybrid environments. The Appian platform allows customers to choose where to deploy their systems without limiting functionality or flexibility. The platform is available as a fully managed service and has been FedRAMP authorized since 2015.

“Appian’s ability to deliver at IL4 will provide an advantage to agencies that need to accelerate their modernization efforts while meeting all security requirements,” said Jason Adolf, Industry Vice President of Global Public Sector at Appian. “Appian is built from the ground up for federal security and data privacy. Our partnership with Smartronix means DoD and other agencies can take advantage of a cloud-based managed service delivering the full benefits of low-code development for their mission-critical IT systems.”
