On Workflow, BPM, BPMS, iBPMS…and mobile phones (part 3)
Confused by industry jargon? Previous posts on this topic went through the evolution of workflow, Business Process Management, and Business Process Management Suite software using a simple mobile phone maturity life cycle analogy. This post wraps up the series and brings us to where we are today with these technologies.
So you got a modern smartphone, a slew of handy apps, and you cannot live a day without your phone. Now you want more: a bigger screen, higher resolution, better camera and a videocamera, faster response time, built-in voice recognition, more accurate GPS navigation, and Near Field Communication (NFC) for mobile payment. You also want a better mobile user experience from your favorite websites and apps; the ability to communicate and collaborate internationally through a call, chat, email, or web conference from you phone; seamless synchronization between your phone and your email and calendar client of choice without you lifting a finger. Oh, and you want a personal digital assistant like Siri who would get your jokes and banter with you.
Just like how user expectations increase as other technologies advance, the BPM market is also evolving to address new requirements with modern technology features. Over the years, many BPM Suites in the market have evolved to include other capabilities like business rules, case management, connectivity and integration on a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), and cloud computing. Today, the most truly advanced BPMS technologies also offer social collaboration and native mobile apps.
Industry analyst firm Gartner calls this super BPM Suite intelligent Business Process Management (iBPMS) for Intelligent Business Operations (IBO). “By incorporating more analytics and other technologies — such as complex-event processing, social media and mobile devices — into process orchestration, iBPMSs give process participants better real-time situational awareness and the ability to tailor their responses more appropriately to emerging business threats and opportunities,” according to Gartner.
So is it time for you to update your workflow or BPMS to a modern, intelligent BPMS? Yes, it is.
