Gartner's latest CIO survey found that more than 26 percent of government CIOs expect budget cuts this year, but don't have a solid plan to adapt yet. While this percentage is lower than those expecting budget cuts in 2013, it still reflects tough times for government IT decision makers.
"Reflecting the extended budget development and appropriation cycles that are typical of public-sector institutions, 26 percent of government CIOs anticipate a budget decrease in 2014, as compared to the 27 percent who expected to be working with lower IT budgets in 2013," said Rick Howard, research director at Gartner.
Furthermore, many government IT investments are more focused on business units, the report noted, with 33 percent of their budgets going outside of the purview of IT departments.
In order to conquer these issues and maintain strength in operations despite budget cuts, many agencies may want to consider focusing some of those funds toward government BPM solutions that will help them optimize workflow and better utilize their resources regardless of constraints. Optimizing business process management in the IT sector can be highly beneficial not just for IT teams, but organizations as a whole as their data, analytics and other assets are optimized across the board.
