U.S. Air Force Transforms Acquisition with Appian in Impact Level 4 (IL 4) Cloud

RESTON, Va.—Appian (NASDAQ: APPN) today announced that the United States Air Force has deployed a modern, digital solution for its Contracting-Information Technology (CON-IT) program on the Appian platform. The CON-IT system will eventually replace seven Air Force legacy contract writing systems. As a result, the solution standardizes acquisition contract writing across the Air Force, drives efficiency for the acquisition and contracting communities, reduces costs, and provides a platform to make functionality enhancements and statutory changes faster. The solution is in production with Authority to Operate (ATO) certification.

“The Air Force is committed to modernizing our legacy business systems in a cost-effective manner, adopting commercial best practices like Agile software techniques, partnering with non-traditional entities like the US Department of Agriculture’s Enterprise Application Services, and implementing extensible, scalable cloud technologies like the business process management capabilities provided by industry partners like Appian,” said Richard T. Aldridge, Program Executive Officer for Business and Enterprise Systems and a member of the Senior Executive Service, U.S. Air Force.

The cloud solution is hosted in the United States Department of Agriculture’s Impact Level 4 data center. Impact Level 4 covers controlled unclassified information that under law or policy requires protection from unauthorized disclosure or other mission critical data. Appian’s ability to deliver at IL 4 provides a distinct advantage to DoD Agencies. In addition to the IL 4 certification, Appian Cloud has a comprehensive security and compliance program, including FedRAMP 2.0, that meets more industry standards than other application Platform-as-a-Service (aPaaS) vendors.

The CON-IT solution expanded on the baseline from the Integrated Defense Enterprise Acquisition System (IDEAS) developed by the Defense Information Systems Agency on Appian. IDEAS is a mature, operationally proven Government-Off-the-Shelf contract writing solution that automates the processes involved in offering, issuing and managing a contract. Appian’s powerful business process management in combination with its low-code development enabled the Air Force to easily further configure and develop IDEAS into CON-IT to meet Air Force-specific requirements for the contracting community.

“Agencies across the Department of Defense must incorporate new cloud and digital technologies to increase efficiency and accelerate mission attainment,” said Francois Dunoyer, Vice President, U.S. Public Sector, Appian. “Of course, security is paramount, and we are proud to deliver CON-IT with Impact Level 4 certification.”
