Forrester's Software Development Predictions: 2021

"By year's end, 75% of development shops will use low-code platforms"

Forrester recently released its Predictions 2021: Software Development, providing insight into the application development and delivery landscape in 2021.

While the report includes a number of predictions, two predictions are particularly relevant to Appian:

    • The rapid adoption of cloud-native tools and technology for agility, efficiency and responsiveness.

    • The bounce back of budgets for software modernization.

Forrester predicts that:

    • By the end of 2021, 75% of application development will use low-code platforms, up from 44% in 2020. "During the COVID-19 crisis, enterprises that had embraced low-code platforms, digital process automation, and collaborative work management reacted faster and more effectively than firms relying only on traditional development." Organizations will increasingly use low-code platforms to deliver mission-critical applications and modernize core, legacy applications.

    • After pausing modernization efforts in 2020, organizations will reprioritize digital modernization, including improving user experiences, automating processes and updating core applications. Use of low-code platforms will be a key part of these strategies. Budget for modernization activities are also expected to bounce back in 2021 as enterprises recognize the need to invest in modernization in order to stay competitive, both with enterprises which have already modernized as well as start-ups free of technical debt.
