AppianPUBLICSECTOR19: Government and Technology Leaders Share Low-Code Success Stories (Part 1 of 2)
The government community celebrated its enterprise low-code accomplishments and the growing adoption of the Appian platform at AppianPUBLICSECTOR19. Participants heard how low-code is changing the modernization of mission systems from speakers at the Food and Drug Administration, United States Marine Corps, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and Conference of State Bank Supervisors. Attendees also learned what’s next in low-code and intelligent automation from Appian CEO Matt Calkins and CTO Mike Beckley.
Customers and partners listened to government executives, technology experts, and the integrator community share their success stories, best practices, and lessons learned. Government Leaders Shared Low-Code Success Stories
Federal, Department of Defense, and state government executives explained how Appian’s enterprise low-code platform helps IT executives more effectively align with program and functional teams. Supported by low-code applications, their agencies have adopted a culture of innovation ready to transform their organizations. We got an inside look at their IT modernization and digital transformation success stories and lessons learned.
Enterprise Transformation at FDA CDER
Ranjit Thomas, Director, Program Management Office, Office of Strategic Programs, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER), shared the FDA’s accomplishments and challenges adopting new technologies, finding ways to evolve, and reducing organizational resistance to change. FDA CDER ensures that safe, effective, and high quality drugs are available for U.S. consumers.
Workflow Management is a core capability for CDER and a high priority for the FDA in managing a 300% increase in submissions. The Appian enterprise low-code platform and CDER’s Workflow Management PMO are critical in modernizing and accelerating the FDA’s drug review and approval processes. Executive leadership and support has been a key to success in achieving the PMO’s three primary objectives:
- Move to scalable cloud based workflow platforms with reusable components
- Enable Offices to be in the driver’s seat of building technology by using agile practices
- Provide consistency across a complex structure managing multiple implementations across multiple environments, contractors and technical organizations
Low-Code is Changing the Modernization of Mission Systems
Jason Adolf (Appian Industry Vice President – Global Public Sector) moderated a session with digital transformation leaders from the Marines, NOAA, and CSBS. The panelists described how their organizations implemented enterprise low-code mission applications that address their unique needs. Speakers described their experiences in modernizing technologies and upgrading skill sets to meet changing mission requirements.
Jason William Glavich, MCRISS Program Manager, the United States Marine Corps, shared that MCRISS releases new capabilities every two to four weeks using an enterprise low-code platform and agile development. Business users are actively involved in the Marine Corps Recruiting Information Support System II (MCRISS II) program because of Appian. A key to success has been focusing on the needs of MCRISS users and including them in the building and roll-out of new applications. MCRISS II is a mobile enabled platform that provides recruiters with all the tools they need from the moment they meet an applicant to the time a new Marine leaves boot camp.
Samir Mehta, Technology Delivery and Operations Director, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), discussed how NOAA is modernizing mission systems in order to better serve citizens, businesses, and other government stakeholders. Samir’s team designed and developed a cloud-based mission system with the Appian platform and agile methodology in less than 120 days. Appian has enabled NOAA’s IT organization to engage end users early and often in the development process. The team is planning to add robotic process automation (RPA) to improve the agency’s permitting application operations.
Tim Doyle, Senior Vice President, Business Services, Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS), observed that an enterprise low-code platform enables his organization to demonstrate new applications and enhancements quickly. Low-code helps CSBS dramatically increase engagement and feedback from state regulators. CSBS is using the Appian platform to develop a new State Examination System (SES), which is an end-to-end supervisory activity management system for state regulators and financial institutions. SES will support 69 state regulatory agencies with about 80,000 users.
Appian Executives Preview the Future of Low-Code
AppianPUBLICSECTOR19 was a unique opportunity for the government community to meet Appian executives and learn about the future of low-code and intelligent automation from industry leaders. The conference agenda included keynote presentations from Appian’s top executives, including:
- Matt Calkins, Founder and Chief Executive Officer>
- Mike Beckley, Founder and Chief Technology Officer
- Malcolm Ross, Vice President, Product Strategy
Matt Calkins cited a Gartner prediction that 65% of new applications will be developed with low-code application platforms (LCAP) by 2024. Matt noted that federal agencies are accelerating their adoption of low-code platforms to more quickly respond to changing requirements and reduce technical debt while accelerating application delivery, new services, and cost savings. He observed that companies and government agencies must manage a changing workforce of Robotic Process Automation (RPA) bots, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and people.
Matt described how companies and agencies use Appian Intelligent Automation to manage this new, blended workforce. He explained the capabilities and benefits of Appian’s zero-code integration with Google ai, UI Path, BluePrism, and Automation Anywhere. Intelligent Automation combines the power of AI, RPA, and RWM with BPM and low-code development. Appian RWM orchestrates the robotic workforce and solves four important RPA challenges:
- Robot lifecycle management
- Case management for exceptions
- Robot scheduling
- Expanded reporting
Mike Beckley explained that Appian is designed for building federal mission systems and discussed examples from the U.S. Treasury and Air Force. Government customers trust Appian because the low-code application platform supports government security, scalability, and DevSecOps requirements and target architectures. The platform also supports more than 5.4 million users and processes an average of 1.5+ billion transactions each day.
