Appian Joins Federal News Radio to Discuss Mobile Strategies for the Federal Government

Staff, Appian
March 11, 2014

Mobility in the federal government continues to be a hot topic. Despite the growing desire to incorporate this technology as part of a modern approach to work, many federal agencies remain hesitant to develop a mobile strategy due to policy and security questions, compounded by on-going budget constraints.

Appian's Vice President of Federal Solutions Chris O'Connell recently sat down with industry experts to discuss the issues of mobility in the federal government during the Federal News Radioforum "Mobility Strategies in Government - Progress & Best Practices 2014." This session of IT thought leadership, broadcast earlier this afternoon, serves as a platform on the current state of mobility in the federal space as well as what the future holds for this new work technology.

During the panel, Chris shared his vision for today's mobile best practices as well as how Appian continues to deploy its modern Work Platform to all areas of government solutions. According to Chris, the most important aspect of ensuring an effective mobile strategy for the federal government is to future-proof applications. Traditional thinking in the federal government is that mobile is an add-on to business applications at an additional cost, partly the reason for its lack of penetration across the federal space.

Whether an application is designed for federal contract writing or building lease processes, the application must include mobile capabilities for easy access to business data and collaboration. Chris strongly believes that in order to maximize the efficiency of an application in terms of business value, it must be deployed on a mobile device. Any IT software solution that is not designed to satisfy mobile use is already a legacy application.

With an eye towards the future of mobility, it is more important than ever that federal agencies design business applications that satisfy the mobile worker first. Today's modern worker is increasingly on the go, and it is imperative that they use mobile for much more than just back and forth email. Application design must be tailored to how tomorrow's work environment will look, not just what we seen today.

According to Chris, business software platforms must be designed so that what we see on the desktop is equivalent to the functionality and efficiency on any of the leading mobile devices. Appian continues to help incorporate this approach to existing and prospective customers by designing applications with full native mobility to ensure that business-critical decisions can be made on any mobile device through access to data, records and real-time collaboration.
