Institute for Defense Analyses

Region: North America
Industry: Government

The Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) is a non-profit corporation that administers three federally funded research and development centers to assist the United States Government in addressing important national security issues, particularly those requiring scientific and technical expertise. IDA takes great pride in the high caliber and timeliness of its analyses, which are produced in an atmosphere that encourages independent thinking and objective results. While working closely with sponsors to define research goals, IDA enforces a rigorous review to ensure its analyses and conclusions are thorough and sound.

Business Problem

IDA was tasked with managing the application process for the multi-agency government SAFETY Act program, which provides important legal liability protections for providers of Qualified Anti-Terrorism Technologies. IDA sought an application management process solution that would automate the workflow for application evaluations, including assignment of tasks and enforcement of milestone deadlines, and routing and processing reports. IDA also wanted to allow for both group and individual collaboration in accessing and reviewing applications, and required appropriate process security features.

Appian BPM Solution

Appian developed a BPM-driven application management process for IDA that is completely electronic, automated, and interactive. The process allows system users to task each other in an ad hoc manner with the appropriate deadlines and reminders for assignments pertinent to the application process. With the implementation of the Appian BPM Suite, IDA’s rate of application processing has greatly increased, while the potential security risks attributed to system users has significantly decreased.
