Appian Announces Record Results for 2007

Appian, an innovative global provider of business process management (BPM) technology, today announced that results for 2007 were the best in the company's eight-year history, with record results in new customer success, existing customer up-sells, and overall revenue. For the second year in a row, Appian's new customer-acquisition growth rate was greater than 160 percent. The upward trajectory through the year led to Q4 results of the second-highest customer bookings in the company's history, expansion of its solution-delivery partnership footprint, and a substantial year-end backlog of contracted orders that positions Appian for a strong and profitable 2008.
<p>
"Our dedication to customers, and our commitment to ensuring that the benefits of BPM are maximized across all levels of their business, resulted in many significant new contracts within our existing installed base," said Matthew Calkins, Appian president and chief executive officer. "That, in combination with our slate of new customer wins across several high-growth market sectors, made 2007 a banner year for Appian."
<p>
Several leading firms chose Appian in the fourth quarter of 2007, including United Parcel Service, Swiss Re (the world's leading and most diversified global re-insurer), and Crawford and Company (the world's largest independent provider of claims solutions), among others. High customer satisfaction in these and other markets also led to up-sells throughout the year. Appian booked substantial new contract awards with several existing clients, including AGF, Mercer, Archstone-Smith, World Bank, Instill, Pearson, FDIC, and the U.S. Army.
<p>
Sami Hassanein, director of EBPM Platforms at Swiss Re, said, "Appian offered us a mature, stable, easy-to-use, and rich BPM platform. Its workflow capabilities will be our primary focus. The Appian product perfectly integrates into our existing product landscape. Additionally, we received excellent and professional support and commitment from the Appian team during the evaluation project, which also enables us to look forward to a long term future together."
<p>
Michael Fortini, director of compliance at Pearson plc, said, "We implemented the Appian Compliance Manager as a way to leverage the BPM platform for crucial financial processes including continuous testing, which helped us evolve from a manual system and audit based approach and delivered great benefits in information access for auditing and compliance verification purposes. We have found both Appian's technology and people to be top-notch, and anticipate increased returns as we implement new features and enhancements."
<p>
Appian continued to strengthen its global go-to-market position with a host of new strategic channel partnerships in 2007. In Q4, the company inked agreements with Cape Clear (the Enterprise Service Bus platform leader), Innovass (in Spain), SMART (a U.K. expansion of Appian's existing U.S. relationship), and Valion (in Switzerland). These new partners join earlier 2007 additions to the Appian partner program including Wipro and Saytam (both top five India-based solution providers), BearingPoint (for multiple implementations across EMEA), SAIC (for solution delivery to its defense client base), Advent Global (which has developed an integration framework for SAP), Web Results in Italy, and EXODUS in Greece.
<p>
Appian's position as a BPM technology and market leader was recognized in 2007 by key industry analysts. In Q4, Gartner, Inc. positioned Appian in the leaders quadrant in its "Magic Quadrant for Business Process Management Suites, 2007." Earlier in the year, Forrester recognized Appian as a leader in both "The Forrester Wave: Human-Centric BPMS for Banking and Investments, Q3 2007," and "The Forrester Wave: Human-Centric BPM for Java Platforms, Q3 2007."
<p>
"Appian will maintain its steadfast focus on making innovative BPM simple," continued Calkins. "We are looking forward to building on our success in 2008 and beyond."

Appian and Cape Clear Announce Partnership

Appian, an innovative global provider of business process management (BPM) technology, announces a new alliance with Cape Clear Software, the Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) Platform leader. The combination enables the design, development and deployment of end-to-end business processes spanning system-to-system integration and service orchestration with Cape Clear's ESB platform, and advanced human-facing process management delivered by Appian's comprehensive BPM suite, Appian Enterprise.
<p>
Customers can now enjoy the benefits of an integrated BPM and ESB environment that facilitates rapid time to solution, process simplification and less complex integration to existing systems. By bridging the gap between human interactions and system interactions, users of the combined solution will significantly improve their ability to change and modify enterprise process applications while leveraging the benefits of service oriented architecture (SOA).
<p>
Appian and Cape Clear have already engaged in multiple opportunities across a variety of industries in North America. Future plans will focus on leveraging implementation and support best practices, embedded components, and other new features that extend the capabilities of both products.
<p>
"Clients are increasingly looking to bring together SOA and BPM in order to connect IT assets with the processes that ultimately consume them," commented Ian Charlesworth, principal analyst at Ovum. "This partnership plays directly to this market demand."
<p>
"SOA plus BPM is a compelling combination for enterprises, but although it is an easy equation to write down, in practice it is not easy to bring the value of these two initiatives together," says Neil Ward-Dutton, research director at analyst firm Macehiter Ward-Dutton. "This partnership leverages the strengths of two best-of-breed technology providers to help customers address the opportunities and challenges that come from pursuing BPM and SOA together."
<p>
"With this partnership, Cape Clear's ESB is blazing a trail in on-demand, system-to-system integration and process management," said Rich Novak, vice president worldwide sales and service at Cape Clear. "Our customers are coming to us with an increasing set of use cases where their integrations and services need to interact with people in diverse and rich ways. We can now offer them sophisticated support for human workflows via this partnership with Appian. This is further evidence of the central role played by the ESB in all aspects of business integration and automation."
<p>
"This partnership enables organizations to align their SOA and BPM objectives from the project start," commented Samir Gulati, vice president, marketing at Appian. "Customers will realize a better long-term return on both investments."

Appian Enterprise Delivers Ongoing Process Excellence to Customers

Simplicity and scalability - two words that differentiate Appian Enterprise, the business process management (BPM) suite from Appian, an innovative global provider of BPM technology. With enhancements that have been integrated into the product over the past year culminating in today's new release, as well as new features that will be available in upcoming releases, Appian continues to deliver the most compelling BPM solutions to the market, simplifying business innovation through flexible, comprehensive and easy-to-use technology.
<p>
On the heels of a stellar third quarter where Appian generated the second-highest order volume in the company's history, today's new release of Appian Enterprise provides customers with multiple new enhancements that simplify process collaboration and innovation between business and IT, allowing all users across the organization to be part of the process of achieving corporate goals. New enhancements optimize the product's performance under high load; reduce memory utilization; improve manageability; improve the product's already impressive performance; and add benchmarking components.
<p>
Forrester Analyst Colin Teubner discussed Appian's BPM suite in The Forrester Wave: Human-Centric BPM For Java Platforms, Q3 2007. His report stated: "Appian Enterprise is designed for simplicity, and it shows. [The product] is the easiest to use for building processes that pull together human work, analytics, and collaboration tools. It also has extremely powerful methods for administering massive numbers of end users."
<p>
Earlier this year, Appian incorporated new user-friendly features into Appian Enterprise that included an improved AJAX-powered interface designer and rules creator, real-time analytics, and desktop and Microsoft Office integration -- all designed to simplify and make BPM more accessible to everyone within the organization.
<p>
As the challenges and requirements encountered by businesses worldwide continue to evolve, so too does Appian Enterprise, growing with customers to utilize process as a way to empower the business. Simplicity and scalability will continue to be key themes for the product, and development will focus on making Appian Enterprise easier to use, develop and manage, as well as allowing for better utilization of system resources so the solution is lighter and quicker in Web browsers and has the ability to support the most demanding process environments.
<p>
In addition, Appian Enterprise is already available to customers as a subscription-based model and hosted platform; in 2008, Appian will enable a complete software-as-a-service market offering, including trial licenses, turn-key enablement of environments and a complete solution marketplace with pre-built process applications.
<p>
"Appian is proud of how we work with our customers to allow them to embrace process as a tool for competitive advantage," said Ali Alavi, Appian vice president of software development. "Over the past several years, as Appian has achieved enormous successes in winning new business in the enterprise BPM market, Appian Enterprise continues to meet the demands of 21st century businesses. We will continue to deliver the industry's easiest to use, develop and manage BPM suite to the market to truly empower the business users of today as well as tomorrow."

Appian Announces Stellar Q3 2007 Results

Appian, an innovative global provider of business process management (BPM) technology, today announced that results for the third quarter of 2007 show the company's position as a leader in the BPM market continues to grow. Q3 2007 saw the second-highest order volume in the company's eight-year history. Based on pipeline visibility, Appian expects this growth trend to continue through early 2008.
<p>
The success of the quarter was driven by existing account growth as well as new customer wins in the financial services and government agency sectors, where Appian has a long-established position of dominance. These market sectors have matured in terms of BPM adoption based on the value of process innovation for creating new efficiencies and economies of scale, establishing and monitoring regulatory compliance, increasing partner and employee collaboration, and driving revenue growth.
<p>
"Appian enables global organizations to simplify process innovation, delivering the real-time visibility and control needed to optimize the critical processes that determine business performance," said Matthew Calkins, Appian president and chief executive officer. "The tremendous success of our third quarter, and the trajectory it represents of our increasing position as a market leader, is a testament to the value of our BPM technology and expertise, including the market's first and only comprehensive BPM suite."
<p>
A Financial Services Leader - In the third quarter of 2007, Appian added three global 1000 financial services leaders to a customer roster that already includes organizations such as the European Bank for Reconstruction, Real Capital LLC (an affiliate company of Barclays North, Inc.), the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, World Bank Group, and more.
<p>
Appian's position as a leader in BPM for financial services organizations was recognized by Forrester Research in its August 2007 report, "Forrester Wave: Human-Centric BPMS For Banking and Investments, Q3 2007." In the independent report, Appian received the highest score in current offering for the vendors evaluated. The report cited requirements such as rapid speed-to-market and modification abilities, the ability to simplify processes and measure results, and easy integration and service-oriented architecture support as key criteria.
<p>
Mary Pilecki, Forrester Research analyst, and author of the Forrester Wave report, stated, "Strong prebuilt processes for both banking and investments help build the high score, but Appian also excels in compliance with a separate compliance manager tool to support the needs of FSIs [financial services institutions]. One of only two firms to score equally well in investments and banking functionality, Appian offers strong FI leadership and expertise."
<p>
A Government Agencies Leader - Appian's success with existing deployments at the U.S. Army and the Defense Information Systems Agency led to third quarter growth within those accounts, as well as new wins with a host of other agencies. Based on proven success with large-scale deployments, Appian won new competitively-bid contracts with the U.S. Treasury, the Defense Acquisition University, and United Space Alliance.
<p>
These agencies have embraced Appian's BPM suite for its ability to foster human collaboration in addition to process automation, and for the value generated by removing "stove-pipe" approaches to deliver a holistic, agency-wide view of common processes. This is evident in the deployment of Appian's BPM procurement module, Appian Acquisition Manager, at a number of agencies. These agencies realize that cost savings can only come from a collaborative, process-oriented approach to cost management that is flexible enough to keep up with dynamic processes.
<p>
Partnership Growth - The results of the quarter were rounded out by significant growth in Appian's global partnership program. New significant partners in the third quarter included Wipro and Saytam (both top five India-based solution providers), BearingPoint (for multiple implementations across EMEA), SAIC (for solution delivery to its defense client base), Smart Group (for solution delivery in insurance markets), Advent Global (which has developed an integration framework for SAP), and two new partners in the European Union (Web Results in Italy, and EXODUS in Greece).
<p>
"Appian has been a leader in BPM innovation since 1999," continued Calkins. "We understand that flexibility, comprehensiveness, and ease-of-use are the hallmarks of a truly valuable BPM solution. Appian embodies those qualities, and the market continues to respond enthusiastically."

Independent BPM Analyst Bruce Silver Recognizes Appian Enterprise 5.6 for Ease of Use and Leading Edge Analytics in 2007 BPMS Report

Appian, the leading provider of Business Process Management Suites (BPMS), today announced the release of an analyst report by Bruce Silver Associates, highlighting the value of Appian Enterprise 5.6, the latest version of Appian's award-winning BPMS. In this technical report that evaluates the latest version's significant updates and competitive advantages, Bruce Silver recognizes Appian Enterprise for taking "a broader view of BPM than most of its competitors" and praises the company for making process management "a focal point of the product's technical architecture."
<p>
"In preparing this report, I conducted a complete evaluation of Appian Enterprise 5.6 and was impressed with its combination of usability and leading edge BPM functionality," stated Bruce Silver, Principal Analyst, Bruce Silver Associates. "Appian is different than most BPMSs in the pure-play market with its complete collaboration portal and integrated analytics capabilities."
<p>
Underscoring the company's dedication to simplifying BPM and integrating casual users into the process, the report states that Appian Enterprise is one of the few BPMSs to support browser-based design and the only one to provide a hosted SaaS environment, both of which benefit from Appian's extensive use of AJAX. The report recognizes Appian's efforts in delivering a fully web-based WYSIWYG Forms Designer, Process Modeler and business rule designer, stating that "most aspects of [Appian's] implementation design are intended to be business analyst-friendly, and there is no dividing line between modeling and design activities." The report goes on to state that the Forms Designer "lets users rapidly build specialized forms using a simple drag-and-drop interface."
<p>
In addition to Appian Enterprise 5.6's usability, the report recognizes the superior flexibility, management and analytics power that it delivers. Silver states: "Unlike most BPMSs, which maintain live process instance data separately from the 'warehouse' of process performance data, Appian's unique Real-Time In-Memory Database does not distinguish between the two, allowing performance reporting based on any set of process data, fully configurable at rument and analytics power that it delivers. Silver states: "Unlike most BPMSs, which maintain live process instance data separately from the 'warehouse' of process performance data, Appian's unique Real-Time In-Memory Database does not distinguish between the two, allowing performance reporting based on any set of process data, fully configurable at runtime."
<p>
"Bruce Silver is one of the most respected analysts in the BPM arena, and we are proud of his Appian Enterprise 5.6 evaluation," said Philip Larson, Director of Product Management at Appian. "Appian focuses on delivering a BPM Suite that not only provides leading functionality, but also simplifies the user experience and enables close collaboration, so that our customers see true business benefits and competitive advantages from our solution. Appian Enterprise 5.6 is a significant step beyond the competitive offerings in this space, and we excited by this early feedback from Silver and Associates."

Appian Launches Latest Version of Award-Winning BPM Suite; Delivering Increased Value for Business Users

Appian, the leading provider of Business Process Management Suites (BPMS), today announced the launch of Appian Enterprise 5.6, delivering capabilities for increasing user productivity and improving business operations. With this release, Appian becomes the first vendor to deliver key capabilities that integrate casual business users into the process, allowing for organizations to derive the greatest value out of their BPM implementations. These new user-friendly features include an improved AJAX-powered interface designer and rules creator, real-time analytics, and desktop and RSS Feed integration -- all designed to simplify and make BPM nnounced the launch of Appian Enterprise 5.6, delivering capabilities for increasing user productivity and improving business operations. With this release, Appian becomes the first vendor to deliver key capabilities that integrate casual business users into the process, allowing for organizations to derive the greatest value out of their BPM implementations. These new user-friendly features include an improved AJAX-powered interface designer and rules creator, real-time analytics, and desktop and RSS Feed integration -- all designed to simplify and make BPM more accessible to everyone within the organization.
<p>
"Appian recognizes that the only way for organizations to fully tap into the knowledge and ingenuity of their workforce is to empower all users to be part of the process, and this is the philosophy that drove all of the innovations into Appian Enterprise 5.6," said Matt Calkins, CEO of Appian. "BPM should be flexible enough to enable all users to participate in unique, personalized ways, and our latest advancement leverages some of today's leading productivity tools, including AJAX, desktop integration and RSS Feeds to ensure that our users gain the greatest advantage possible from Appian Enterprise."
<p>
Appian Enterprise 5.6 is the first BPM Suite to incorporate a browser-based, AJAX environment for creating and managing rules separate from processes, which enables users to quickly adapt policies to address changes within their business environments. Through its AJAX-enabled, browser-based WYSIWG Interface Designer, Appian Enterprise enables customers to create forms, dashboards and other process driven interfaces. Business users can now modify the parameters of rules or policies without being encumbered by the details of the entire process. For example a user can modify inventory thresholds to automatically redistribute stock without requiring the user to alter the entire supply chain. In addition, Appian provides a centralized rules repository so that users can easily manage, implement and reuse processes throughout the entire environment.
<p>
Appian Enterprise now incorporates new desktop integration and mobile technology tools, enabling users to leverage the applications they know best to speed implementation, simplify management and increase overall productivity. In addition to Appian's existing Microsoft Outlook plug-in, Appian has added Appian Smart Nodes that enable the manipulation and creation of Word, Excel and E-mail templates. These plug-ins allow users to interact with processes directly from those environments, so that they can easily create processes that increase productivity and simplify collaboration. For example, users can now develop a process that automatically creates and emails documents, such as monthly reports or status updates, to a predetermined group. Appian has also added more than 75 new pre-built activities for facilitating collaboration and participation in process management.
<p>
As RSS Feeds have matured to include process lists, task lists, process models, documents and discussion forums, Appian Enterprise 5.6 is integrating these capabilities to help simplify process management. By fully implementing RSS feeds throughout the product, Appian is enabling customers to utilize process management anywhere the user chooses to aggregate their RSS subscriptions -- on the desktop, mobile device, or Web sites.
<p>
Appian Enterprise's new patent-pending optimization technology delivers real-time analytic information to drive process improvements, so that users can report on anything, at anytime, in real-time without delays or data loss. This significantly increases the flexibility of process analytics and allows certain processes to "self optimize." For example, traditionally a process might state that a task should be escalated if it is delayed two days, but now Appian enables an escalation to be triggered if the task is taking longer than average or deviates from the norm. The process engine can make real-time queries to the performance engine and access all of the data at any time. These reports can be used in the context of process rules to adjust process flow, trigger exceptions and escalations, modify security privileges or task assignments and display contextual information to a user on a form.
<p>
As end-to-end processes now span organizational and geographical boundaries, Appian Enterprise 5.6 is the first BPM solution to provide full support for global, cross-organizational processes that span cultural and language barriers. With a fully internationalized interface to supporting localized forms as well as right-to-left reading, Appian Enterprise has been optimized to support geographically dispersed processes. This provides international organizations with a consistent foundation for structuring and managing all of their critical business processes.

Appian Delivers Advanced Technology Platform to Support Army Defense Knowledge Online Initiative

Appian, the leading provider of Business Process Management Suites (BPMS), today announced that it has been selected by Northrop Grumman to provide the enterprise portal technology and underlying process-based services to support the U.S. Army's task order to develop Defense Knowledge Online (DKO). The task order with a $267 million ceiling was awarded under the U.S. Air Force Network-Centric Solutions contract vehicle and is the largest portal task order ever awarded in the federal government.
<p>
"As the key technology provider for the initial Army Knowledge Online (AKO) initiative, Appian is excited by this next stage of implementation as it evolves into DKO to serve the entire Department of Defense," said Matt Calkins, CEO of Appian. "DKO promises to provide all warfighters with access to the information they need to better do their jobs and complete their missions, and we are actively working to deliver the best possible solution to attain this goal."
<p>
Leveraging Appian's robust platform, DKO will be the single enterprise service portal, serving as the entry point for all U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and authorized users to access DoD and government intranets supporting operations, missions and critical support processes for forces worldwide. DKO will provide relevant information and applications to the warfighter and other government users through a secure service-oriented framework to help them perform their missions more effectively. As the industry's best-of-breed large-scale knowledge-based portal, Appian's technology will help enable the DKO enterprise solution to grow from 1.8 million users to possibly eight million users or more, potentially across all federal government agencies.
<p>
Using Appian Enterprise, DKO delivers advanced personalization capabilities for deploying content to an unlimited number of targeted communities based on the profiles and preferences of groups of users. DKO users can collaborate as individuals or groups in private and secure virtual communities that they create themselves, on demand. DKO can thus establish a nested network of structured communities of practice (CoPs) that can span all operations, training, leader and doctrine domains within the DoD. As the key enabling technology that connects these domains, DKO enables the DoD to develop, institutionalize and apply best practices in real-time; improving decision-making and performance across the spectrum of Army operations.
<p>
The length of the DKO task order is one year with four six-month options. Initial work will be performed at Fort Belvoir, Va., an undisclosed site in Maryland, and in southwest Asia.

World Bank Deploys Appian Enterprise to Enhance Effectiveness and Efficiency in the Collaboration with its Partners on Virtual Learning and Dialogue Events

Appian, the leading provider of Business Process Management Suites (BPMS), today announced that the World Bank has deployed Appian Enterprise to support event management for the Global Development Learning Network (GDLN), a partnership of learning centers facilitated by the Bank. The new GDLN Event Management System (GEM) enables GDLN Affiliates and clients worldwide to more effectively manage the planning and delivery of joint virtual learning and communication events. GDLN events are delivered using distance learning techniques and technologies and typically involve, simultaneously, multiple parties in different countries and regions. By providing a collaborative, process-based workspace for coordinating all logistics, Appian's BPMS delivers the structure and flexibility required to support these events.
<p>
The World Bank's GDLN Secretariat chose Appian's BPMS to optimize the entire cycle of event planning and provide a foundation that allows GDLN Affiliates to receive proposals from their clients, work collaboratively in planning events and help manage negotiations between their clients and other Affiliates involved in the same event. The new event management system will also help GDLN Affiliates schedule their own facilities and services for events, manage invoices, collect participant contact information, and conduct surveys efficiently.
<p>
"We selected Appian Enterprise after a competitive bidding process because its Business Process Management Suite provides the structure, features and flexibility we needed to help support the requirements of Affiliates and clients worldwide," said Monika Weber-Fahr, Manager for the GDLN and Multimedia division in the World Bank Institute. "Once GEM is fully operational, it can provide our Affiliates and their clients with a comprehensive solution that responds to their unique needs."
<p>
Currently, there are over 100 GDLN Affiliates and clients in nearly 80 countries, most of them in the developing world. Appian Enterprise has the capabilities to fulfill the needs of GDLN Affiliates and clients by providing the BMPS in several languages, working in variable bandwidth environments, and by being equipped with global 24x7 support. The IT maintenance costs of GEM are also minimized since Appian Enterprise's BPMS uses the latest AJAX technologies to deliver a desktop application experience to its users without installing additional software.
<p>
"Appian Enterprise BPMS enables our customers to deploy the industry's strongest process capabilities while improving the efficiency of their existing solutions," asserted Matthew Calkins, CEO, Appian. "We are proud to provide a comprehensive solution that can meet the global needs of GDLN Affiliates and clients, allowing for a quick and reliable implementation. Our offering will add structure to the event management processes of the World Bank's GDLN partnership and improve the way its Affiliates and clients are supported."
<p>
Appian Enterprise 5 is a comprehensive suite that provides fully integrated process, knowledge and analytics capabilities to drive quantifiable ROI and expedite the delivery of next-generation, process-driven solutions. The leading BPMS enables customers to automate, execute and optimize cross-functional business processes from beginning to end.

Vienna, VA., March 6, 2007 - Appian, the leading provider of Business Process Management Suites (BPMS), today announced that it has been selected as one of KMWorld Magazine's "100 Companies That Matter in Knowledge Management" for the third consecutive year.

Now in its sixth year, KMWorld's "100 Companies That Matter in Knowledge Management" list is compiled by the publication's editors, colleagues, KM practitioners, theorists, analysts, vendors and their customers.

The heart of Appian's success in BPM continues to be finding innovative ways for organizations to connect corporate strategy to the work people do everyday."
