Matthew Calkins, President & CEO
Matthew Calkins has been the President and CEO of Appian since founding the company in 1999. Mr. Calkins was an executive at MicroStrategy for most of the 1990's and today serves on the MicroStrategy board of directors. He was one of InformationWeek's 10 "Innovators and Influencers" for 2005. He was awarded the 2004 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award in the Emerging Technology and Communications category. Appian was placed on the Inc. 500 in 2004 as the 6th fastest growing private software company in the U.S.

Mr. Calkins holds a B.A. in Economics from Dartmouth College, and won the College's Rockefeller Prize as outstanding economics graduate.

Michael Beckley, CTO
Michael Beckley is a co-founder of Appian and is responsible for Appian's product strategy. He has successfully led teams that launched major new products and projects at Appian, including Appian BPM and Appian Portal, which has more than 5.6 million licensed users. He has personally led engagements at leading Appian customers including GMAC, Talbot's, and the US Navy. Mr. Beckley is an industry expert and thought leader in business process management (BPM) and portal technology and has appeared as an invited speaker at industry conferences across the US, Europe, and Asia. Before Appian, he was a Product Manager and led industry analyst relations at MicroStrategy.

Mr. Beckley received his AB in Government from Dartmouth College.
Marc Wilson, Vice President of Professional Services
Marc Wilson is a co-founder of Appian and is responsible for the company's acclaimed professional services business. In this role, he oversees all of Appian's implementation and customization efforts on client sites. Mr. Wilson has successfully delivered some of the largest and most sophisticated projects in the software industry, including the Army's well-known Army Knowledge Online (AKO) program, a winner of the prestigious 2003 DCI Portal of the Year Award. As Appian's high-level program manager, he worked with executives throughout the Army to develop a strategy for the process of webification and IT consolidation as well as project control and risk management for the "World's Largest Intranet" (Wired Magazine). Mr. Wilson has also directly managed major projects for companies like General Motors and Finlay Fine Jewelry. He has overseen the development of Appian's training department as well as the expansion of Appian's professional services into the web services, identity management, business process management, and procurement arenas. Prior to Appian, Mr. Wilson was a Senior Consultant at Boston Pacific Company, where he was responsible for creating and developing strategic plans for energy companies preparing for retail competition in the electricity industry.

Mr. Wilson received his AB in Government from Dartmouth College.

Bob Kramer, CFO
Bob Kramer is a co-founder of Appian and is responsible for the company's financial operations. Prior to Appian, he was a consultant with MicroStrategy specializing in data warehouse design for financial accounting systems.

Mr. Kramer received his BS in Economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Brian Pettit, Vice President of Sales
Brian Pettit joined Appian in August 2007. A veteran of information technology enabling business transformation and process improvement, Mr. Pettit's experience includes leading sales and alliances at HandySoft, where he accelerated customer and partner development. He also served as the director of integration solution sales at NetManage and was responsible for directing North American sales and business development operations and developing key partnerships. Prior to NetManage, Mr. Pettit was the vice president of business development at Comensura, a division of Corporate Services Group, and provided sales, marketing and partner alliance leadership tasks for customer expansion and acquisitions.

Samir Gulati, Vice President of Marketing
Samir Gulati joined Appian in April 2007. Mr. Gulati previously served as Vice President of Global Marketing for Pegasystems, a publicly-traded BPM vendor, where he successfully re-positioned the company as the leader in the rules-driven Business Process Management market by executing an aggressive Brand Leadership program. Most recently, Mr. Gulati was Vice President of Marketing at Apptix, where he was responsible for positioning the company as a premiere provider of on-demand messaging and collaboration solutions for small and medium-sized businesses. Previously, as Vice President of Worldwide Marketing at SAGA Software, a spin-off from Software AG, Mr. Gulati was responsible for setting the strategic direction for SAGA. He also led the successful global launch of SAGA's new Enterprise Application Integration product suite -- a key infrastructure technology for enabling integrated eBusiness.

Mr. Gulati holds a B.S. in Electronic Engineering, and received his Masters in Computer Science from the University of Pennsylvania and his MBA from the University of Chicago.

Ali Alavi, Vice President of Software Development
Ali Alavi has been Appian's Vice President of Software Development since January 2004 and is responsible for the design and development of Appian's market leading software. Prior to joining Appian, he was a director in the technology department of Microstrategy for several years. During that time, Mr. Alavi pioneered the use of the World Wide Web for delivery of Business Intelligence reporting to the masses, while growing a team of 50 people to innovate and advance the product as web technologies evolved. In addition, he was one of the original designers of Microstrategy's market-leading SQL-generating Engine. He also holds four patents on thin-client web-based software and Business Intelligence reporting systems.

Mr. Alavi received his Bachelors and Masters in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Garry Yeates, Vice President of Professional Services
Garry Yeates joined Appian in March 2008 and is responsible for all professional services leadership, including Appian's Expert Services and Center of Excellence offerings. Mr. Yeates has an extensive background in enterprise software services and consulting. Prior to joining Appian, he was Managing Principal at CIGITAL, Inc., an enterprise software security consulting firm for Fortune 1000 clients, where he was a key player in the firm's rapid growth. As Business Area Director at Johnston McLamb, he was responsible for a large portion of the consulting services revenue in its first five years. Previously, Mr. Yeates was Director of Federal Business Development for Sapient, a leader in eBusiness transformation, web application development and offshore development outsourcing to the Fortune 1000, and a Vice President at James Martin and Company, a preeminent international Information Engineering consulting firm.

Mr. Yeates received his M.S. in Administration from The George Washington University, and his B.S. in Industrial Engineering from North Carolina State University.

George Barlow, General Manager of Appian Anywhere
George Barlow has more than thirty years of entrepreneurial and public corporation experience in the commercial software industry. Prior to joining Appian, he was Senior Vice President, Technology & Operations, for i-Beacon, a healthcare data management and consumer analytics company that helps guide consumer marketing campaigns (DTC) for pharmaceutical companies. Before that Mr. Barlow was Senior Vice President, Healthcare Information Technology, for ProVantage Health Services (NYSE), a $1 billion pharmacy benefit management company (acquired by Merck-Medco; NYSE), where he participated in the IPO and had P&L responsibility for the internet healthcare solutions group including ProVMed and RationalMed, encompassing one of the largest integrated medical/pharmaceutical information databases in the world. Mr. Barlow was also an executive with HealthVISION (later acquired by Eclipsys; NASDAQ), where he helped develop and launch the innovative CareVISION EMR and clinical data repository used today in major healthcare organizations worldwide. He has developed business and technology solutions for leading companies such as Kaiser Permanente, Toshiba America, McGraw-Hill, and Pacific Bell.

Mr. Barlow received his BA in business and political science from Western Michigan University and has a Clinical Computing Certificate from Harvard Medical School.
