Business process management, or BPM, software, developed by the Appian Corporation makes use of service oriented architecture. Appian has introduced a new way of wrapping common SOA objects, such as web services and Enterprise Java Beans (EJBs) into more easily understood Appian Smart Services. In layman's terms, service oriented architecture is a way of thinking about software in which, instead of designing a single comprehensive system, the software is actually made up of smaller stand-alone services that can be accessed separately to the benefit of several parties.
Appian has put together a graphical user interface that essentially allows ordinary business users to take advantage of powerful and complex software logic in their BPM software. This was done by packaging interfaces that define the ways by which an application may request services from other resources. Users can utilize the packaged Web Service, Database and JMS generic Smart Services to easily create direct connections to third party applications from a process model.
