Clay Richardson from Forrester Research is a proponent of tackling and structuring big data with big process. In a recent blog post and in his riveting keynote presentation at Appian World 2012, Richardson discussed the four cornerstones to successfully tackle and implement big process across the enterprise by:

The final keynote presentation of Appian World 2012 was given by Neil Ward-Dutton from MWD Advisors. He presented “The New Way We Work: Towards Adaptive Case Management.” Ward-Dutton opened his presentation by stating that the nature of work is changing radically. There are three big challenges affecting businesses today: globalization – “connectedness” is driving sophisticated value chains; transparency – industry regulations, consumer pressure and competition are driving openness; and smart, connected markets – customers see the “online world” as the natural place to look for information and services.

Completing the business track at Appian World 2012, David Carpenter, Director of BPM at Archstone, presented “Extending BPM in the Mobile Age.” Archstone has a rich mobile BPM story. Archstone is a recognized Leader in apartment investment and operations, with a portfolio concentrated in many of the most desirable neighborhoods in and around Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, New York, and more. Carpenter’s role is to craft and execute the BPM strategy at Archstone.

Once again, attendees at Appian World 2012 split up into three tracks – beginner, developer and business. Developers are learning about best practices in mobile BPM from Appian’s Christine Hutchison. Beginners are enjoying a Government Solutions Panel featuring US Marine Corps, Horizon Industries, Collabralink, and Amazon Web Services. For the business track, Tim Clarke, head of applications for Benenden Healthcare Society, presented on Self-Service Case Management.

Malcolm Ross, VP of Product Marketing at Appian, provided Appian World Attendees with an in-depth look at the upcoming Appian 7. He started with a quick look at 2011 product highlights, which included global hosting expanded to Singapore (Brazil is coming in 2012), recognition as the highest-security BPM product (FISMA and GOV Cloud certified), and Appian’s fast pace of innovation (4 platform releases in 2011 alone).

Ken Percell, former CIO of the US Air Force Materiel Command, presented a dynamic keynote speech on “Confessions of a CIO: Learning & Applying Lessons from Weapon Systems to Business Systems.” Currently COO of the Percell Group LLC, he spent 35 years as a civilian with the Air Force (15 as a Senior Executive). He talked about the lessons learned from his years of experience.

Appian World attendees were treated to an impressive case study for veteran job placement. The US Veterans Administration provided an overview of the VA for Vets program. The VA for Vets program is a model for federal veteran employment. The aim is to recruit, reintegrate, and retain veterans in federal jobs, with services such as resume building, job coaching, and training. The program is supported by the Veterans Employment Service Office, who leverage a high touch and high tech solution to connect with veterans. The program has resulted in a higher percentage of veteran job placement and retainment.
