Businesses must respond to growing need for mobile device management
Implementing mobile device management solutions will likely create a number of challenges for businesses, as the technology underscores the emergence of smartphones and tablets and their broad impact on enterprise operations. According to a recent study sponsored by Azeleos and conducted by Osterman Research, implementing MDM systems will likely lead to increased labor costs for IT, but the practice is increasingly necessary to support corporate mobility trends.
In the study, Scott Gode, vice president of product management and marketing at Azeleos, explained that most companies using mobile devices have primarily used the BlackBerry Enterprise Server to manage end-user mobile computing platforms. However, the rising number of organizations supporting personal smartphones and tablets or giving workers Android or iOS-based devices is making the BlackBerry Enterprise Server inadequate for operational requirements, the news source explained.
Essentially, Osterman Research found that the increased need for mobile device management is combining with the growing capabilities of smartphones and tablets to put IT in a position where it has to support more functionality, leading to an increase in costs.
Because traditional device management solutions, particularly the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, are unable to meet current demands, the need for more IT investments is becoming prevalent, said Gode.
“Obviously [the BlackBerry Enterprise Server] platform doesn’t have legs to grow … so [organizations will] have to migrate to some other platforms, so there will be costs associated with the new platforms and new hardware and associated training costs for IT personnel, as well as potentially new hiring to manage and monitor that new MDM platform,” said Gode, according to InformationWeek.
To deal with the costs associated with implementing MDM, it is vital that businesses optimize their operations to align with the needs of mobile users. Since the technology is creating new demands for IT departments, companies have to develop strategies that help IT adjust to the new solution to streamline procedures. One of the best ways to accomplish this is to implement business process management software solutions, which help companies align operational and technical requirements created by mobile, social and cloud technologies. This ensures the data and IT-related growth offered by such innovative solutions as mobile device management end up leading to process-level improvements that help companies grow.
