I’m the father of two young boys. It’s clear to me that the more Charlie and Henry learn to share, the better it is for everybody. Their play is more rewarding. They learn from each other. I don’t have to buy them two of everything.

Federal CIO Steven Van Roekel wants federal agency CIOs to embrace precisely that same lesson. Earlier this month, he announced finalization of the Federal IT Shared Services Strategy. This is big news, and BPM software can play a big role in helping government IT become “good sharers.”

When it comes to hiring in the public sector, the mobile and social revolutions present a great opportunity for federal agencies. Mobile BPM and social BPM provide a perfect on-ramp.

That insight comes from Appian CTO and co-founder Michael Beckley. Beckley was recently interviewed by Federal News Radio host Francis Rose, for an in-depth look at hiring challenges in the federal government. Federal HR professionals are excited about the opportunity BPM software presents to take their processes into mobile and social environments – without the burden of more bureaucracy, more overhead and the need to add more systems.

In May, Appian co-founder and CTO Michael Beckley spoke with Francis Rose of FederalNewsRadio for an in-depth look at challenges and success factors for hiring in the federal sector.

Agency challenges in hiring, Beckley explained, have to do with connecting people and systems, and dealing with obsolete or outmoded architecture. HR (like acquisition/procurement) is an area of low priority when it comes to new IT financing and budget support. But it does warrant serious attention, because the federal government is facing a huge challenge in finding and identifying employment candidates.

“Within a decade, [government] will have a nearly complete cloud infrastructure.”

That’s according to Deniece Peterson, manager of industry analysis at government research firm Input. Peterson was quoted in a special feature in Washington Technology magazine, promoting a December 2010 survey of 460 government officials by the 1105 Government Information Group.

The survey indicated that 90 percent of government officials surveyed consider the cloud to be the real deal – not merely a passing fad. That said, adoption continues to be hampered by lingering concerns, particularly over security. The article points out that “leading cloud vendors are in the process of getting their clouds certified as safe and secure by the federal government during the next several years.” As a cloud platform and application solution, Appian’s cloud BPM software is way ahead of the pack in this regard.

Conventional wisdom says that government can’t attract the best talent and get new hires up-and-running quickly. Mountains of paperwork cause long delays. Lack of flexibility and visibility into the hiring/on-boarding process gets in the way of fulfilling critical hiring goals. The whole experience can be frustrating both for federal hiring teams and the people who wish to devote themselves to public service.

It doesn’t have to be this way, and BPM software can help. Come to tomorrow’s Human Capital Management Federal (HCMF) Recruitment & Talent Management Strategy Day to learn how.

summer time on the beach There is a Cure for the “Summer Time Blues:" Enhancing Agency Productivity Year Round

Remember when both the business and government worlds slowed down during the summer? Yeah, neither do we. While summer is a time for many to plan personal vacations and much-needed time off, it is actually a time for government agencies to continue their efforts to maintain maximum productivity.

In addition, as we learned from yesterday’s Bisnow event, “Hottest Trends in Diplomacy and Democracy,” the summer is a critical spending time for government. Stay tuned for our exclusive video from this event.

Back to the topic of government productivity. As we have been highlighting on this blog, Business Process Management (BPM) is playing a critical role in helping government be more efficient and effective. One key element to remember is that BPM allows for the automation of complex processes and the provision of real-time access to critical information and applications that drive significant, measurable improvements in productivity.

From a Human Resources perspective, BPM enables federal HR departments to accelerate the hiring process, and acquire the talent needed for government projects to be fully maximized. On the Project Management side of things BPM delivers the active project management, process visibility, documentation audit trails, and collaboration capabilities needed to meet aggressive roll-out schedules for urgent federal program deployments.

Allowing for the quick on-boarding of the right talent married with cutting-edge project management tools, BPM provides the perfect solution that will allow any government agency to meet and exceed productivity goals – even in the dog days of summer!
